They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him (Psalm 92: 14-15)
Many people are afraid of getting old, because getting old is synonymous with weak memory, decreased physical strength and ability, loss of independence and having to depend on other people, experiencing loneliness because they will be increasingly isolated socially, and finally closer to death. Some people try to stay “young” with various health supplements, others try to maintain strength and power. But, in the end, no one can escape aging.
In contrast to many things that are frightening in the world view, God’s words even emphasize that in their old age, people who live rooted and grow in God will be very useful to God. There is a task that God wants them to do, because only they can do it, which is to preach God’s truth, which they have witnessed in their lives from their youth until they are old; proclaims that the Lord is a firm rock, a true refuge, always reliable and that never disappoints; and to preach that God is the Most Just God and in Him there is no fraud. Elderly friends, let us do this noble task.
Lord, help us not to be afraid of growing old, because we know You, who were with us in youth, will remain with us in our old age. When our outer humans can degenerate, help our inner man to become stronger. Amen.
